Facts
Vijayanagar in Bangalore City
About four decades ago the present Vijayanagara in Bangalore City was covered by lush green forest surrounded by Hosahalli, Thimmanahalli, Agrahara Dasarahalli, Marenahalli and other villages.
Amidst the forest, there was a huge rock which was an abode of a monkey. When layout formation was started in the area, the authorities concerned tried to clear the rocky outcrop but they found it was not possible to do so as the people of the area had started worshipping the rock as Lord Hanuman. Later on, the rock piece became a landmark of the area as “Koti Bande”.
Due to developmental activities and formation of layouts, the natural growth of forest was disappeared and the area became as one of the prominent residential areas of the western part of Bangalore City. In the beginning the locality was developed around Hosahalli but later on, it was named as ‘Vijayanagar’ which is derived from Vijayanagar Dynasty. The West of Chord road passes through Vijayanagara. Adjacent to Vijayanagara is RPC (Railway parallel Colony) Layout which is an area surrounded by railway line, pipeline and chord road. Recently, the RPC Layout has been re-named as Hampinagara. Vijayanagara has become one of the prominent residential areas of the Bangalore City, and has attracted many employees of reputed Industries to have their own layouts viz BHEL, KIMCO, KAVIKA, BINNY Mills and departments of Income Tax, Industries and Commerce etc., Vijayanagara has one of the biggest and modern libraries in the State. The BMTC has started transport and transit points in Vijayanagara for the benefit of commuters.
Vijayanagar has a mixed composition of population from slum dwellers to middle class to affluent sections. Some of the areas are provided with all facilities like water supply, Electricity, street lights, roads etc., but there are some black spots like Bapujinagar, Deepanjalinagar, timber yard layout etc which require urgent attention in providing the basic requirements and improving the same. These areas get inundated when there is heavy rain fall as such; proper drainage system is to be provided. The Vrishabhavati river which runs in the constituency has unfortunately become polluted and has become a big drainage. This requires improvement. The west of chord road which passes through the constituency has links Tumkur Road and Mysore Road.
Vijayanagara is close to reputed Educational institutions viz R V Engineering college, Bangalore University Jnana Bharati, National Law School of India University, PES Institute of Technology etc. Several reputed educational Institutes are functioning in this locality.
Prominent religious places are Adichunchangari Mutt, Shani Mahatma Temple, Maruti mandira, Kodandaramaswamy Temple, gali Anjaneyaswamy Temple ,Sankashtahar Ganapathi Temple which is built around a garden with plants for each of the planets, etc
Annual religious festivals take place in the locality which draws devotees from surrounding areas like Attiguppe, Nagarabhavi, Byataranapura, Bapujinagar, BCC Layout, Chandra Layout etc.,
The metro Rail project passes through Vijayanagara which is a boon to traveling public. KSRTC satellite bus stand on Mysore road also has a huge shopping mall.
However, efforts are to be made to overall improvement of the locality in providing basic needs of the citizens wherever it is lacking.
